My Diary (11)

January 18th, 2006 20.00 pm. New Delhi

Attending A Seminar At My Department

Today, i attend a linguistic seminar at my department. In this opportunity, the speaker is a native of English, Prof. Lyle Jenkins from the Bio-linguistics Institute, Cambridge Mass, USA. The topic to be discussed is "Biolinguistics: Structure, Acquisition, and Evolution of Language". For me, this is the first time i can see and meet a native face to face, and it is also an exiting moment in my life that i never imagine before. Maybe for others it's not so special, but for me it is.

The seminar opens with an opening speech given by one of my lecturer, Prof. Tistha Baghi who ever teaches me Introduction to Linguistics in my first semester. She informs all of us in that seminar room about the brief outline of what Prof. Jenkins is going to represent. It is a short opening that takes only one minute. After that, Prof. Jenkins starts his representation on the topic.

Everyone in the room hear carefully to what he is saying and write on the important information on their notes. Event my lecturers who have time to come, pay a serious attention on his explanation. They also make notes of themselve. I do the same thing also. But i find a lot of difficulty in understanding his English because he speaks too fast, for me. It is not his fault, it's only me that not used to hear the way how he uses English. Then, i realise that it is better for me to make a record of his speech. Fortunately, i bring my type-recorder with me. I ask one of my friend to put it in front of him. I think i can hear it later after arriving home. The rest time i use to try to understand his speech event only a few sentence.

It's about one and half hour duration for him to give explanation on Biolinguistics. Then he closes it by giving opportunity to anyone who has question. There are there questions dealing with the topic. He gives a brief explaination to asnwer all of the questions because of the limited time. And he invites all of us who still have problem in linguistics, particularly in Boilinguistics, to send him email to his webside. All of us welcome it very much.

The seminar is closed by a closing speech from our Head Department, Mr. R.C. Sharma, by giving a highly appreciation to the speaker and his explaination, as well as thanking for his coming, and to the audiences that are willing to come.

My Diary (10)

December 10th 2006, 09.00 am.

Celebrating Eid-ul Adha at KBRI (Indonesian Embassy)

On this date, we Indonesian Muslims in New Delhi celebrated Eid-ul Adha, but actually, Indian Muslims here would celebrate it on the next day. Our embassy followed the wukuf time in Arafah Makkah, Saudi Arabiah which reported that the time felt on December 9th, 2006, and the Indian Muslim here argued that the exact time was on December 11th 2006.

At this celebration, there were Indonesian students along with KBRI staffs, some Muslim diplomats from neighboring countries like Malaysia, Brunei, and Singapore. We were taking praying together at KBRI. After taking praying, we were welcomed to have breakfast together hosted by our embassador. Not only Muslims, the breakfast was also served to non-Muslim who came after the Eid prayer had been done.

Like in every celebrations held at KBRI, the food served were Indonesian foods, like ketupat, ikan asin (salty fish), satai, etc. All of us enjoyed the moment together. just like we were in our home-country, Indonesia. After eating, we talked in a friendly way and joking endlessly.

I went back home at 14.00 pm. and went to bed as soon as iarrived home because i felt very tired.

My Diary (9)

Friends of Mine In Deppt. of Linguistics (1)

To have new friends is an amazing moment, especially for me. I really love to make friends in every places i go. When i was still a young little girl, i always told my childhood friends that one days i would have some friends from outside or abroad. At that time, all of my friends laught at me. They told me not to dream about that impossible thing, because i were only the daughter of a 'poor' labour man. How could have friends from abroad? It was strongly impossible. Hearing this, my heart was little bit upsad, but i forced myself to be strong and made it as a power to make this impossible dream came true.

Time passed, i run my life without knowing that one day this impossible dream will come true. i really do not realise that what my friends said about that impossible dream happens now. Now, i am staying in New Delhi, India (how can i be here, i've already told you in My Diary (3)). Entering new campus, of course i meet new friends also. And you know, i have a lot of friends here and they are come from different countries. I have friends from India, of course, Thai, Iran, Korea, Mongol, Manipur, and Russia. The way how we communicate each other is by using English as the language of the world.

Particularly, i know all of my friends' name, but i'm not so close with all of them, only some of them. I will tell you about them one by one. Today i will inform you about one of my indian friend whose name Ishani. She is a nice girl with a nice smile. I really like her smiling. She is not come from New Delhi, she is from Calcutta. She has finished her BA in Calcutta and now continue in the same department with me. She takes linguistics also for her BA degree. She is one of the clever students in my calss, and has a good class participation. Because of her, i never fell afraid any more to ask my lecturer directly in the class if i have problems. She suggest me to do that and not to be afraid of that. Our lecturers are really nice men and very comprehensive to all their students.

She is the first student who greet me at the first time i enter the class. She also the first student who offer me her help if i have problems in understanding the courses or in something alse. What a nice girl. I hope i can be a good friend for her as she has done for me. It's already one week i never meet her because we have a winter holiday, and she tells me that she will return home during this winter holiday. I wiil her again next monday.

That's all about Ishani, letter i will tell you more about her. See you!

My Diary (8)

January 1st, 2006 17.30 pm.

First New Year In Delhi

When i write the date above, i fell something inside my heart tells me that you are now should do different things, because the year has passed. If you don't want to change your life to be a better one, it will leave you behind, far away from its fantasy and miracle. Never say sorry if it happens with you, it'll be useless.

Yes, 2005 had left us, and now comes 2006 as a new year in our struggle of life in this world. Before i forget, let me greet you all with "A Very Happy New Year", especially for you Diary. You has been my beloved friend where i can tell every thing about my happiness, sadness, what i like as well as what i hate, my sorrow, what i fell, etc. etc. Nice to have a good companion like you and happy new year for you also. Be my friend forever, okey?

This year, i'm not in my country, and it'll be the first time for me to celebrate the new year far away from my family and friends. Event here i already have new family and friends, it won't be the same, but it's still be better if i should celebrate it alone. I receive so many new year greetings from my friends including my Indonesia friends of course, my Indian, Iranian, Thai, and Korean friends, too. At least, it can help me to forget my sadness of celebrating new year far from my hometown.

I hope this year i can do the best things for my life and for my future also,so i can make people around me fell that the existence of me around them doesn't mean nothing. I want to be a more better and better woman this year. i should do that, at least to make an improvement in my own life. For me, the major concern of my plan is still my education. I have to pass my postgraduate here as soon as possible, getting good result, and coming back home. Meanwhile, i think i can learn to experience many goods new things during my stay in India. Studying their culture, tradition, etc. etc. for not wasting my time unusefully.

After that, i still have another dream in my education. It is my dream to continue my study to get Phd. degree. I hope i can do that, maybe not this year, because this year is my first year in MA. but i really want to make it come true as long as i still have the power in me. Just pray for me okey?

Diary, i hope my friends outside will do the same thing in their life. I hope they have a great interest in making improvements in all of their aspects of life. I do hope that. And please send my best regard to them all.

See you soon diary. Good afternoon!
